The Glasgow 2024 Worldcon is nigh, and I have managed to weasel into two panel spots on Friday 9 August 2024:
Imagining our Great AI Overlords is, of course, right up my alley. We’ll be talking about creating believable and/or interesting fictional AI, and discussing some examples in fiction. I’m specifically interested in realistic AI, especially what with the emergence of real AI systems for comparison, but also how AI is used as a stand-in for underclasses and/or neurodiverse people. The panel will take place in Hall 1 at 16.00 BST.
Pretty much right after that at 17.30 BST, we’ll discuss Neurodivergent Approaches to Stories in Alsh 1. Our diverse panel will discuss both how we process fiction written by others and how we write our own stories, and if there’s something to take into account as a neurodivergent author in taking traditional writing advice.
I will have copies of The Paperclip War with me for small-time peddling purposes, and will be doing some pre-promo for my English short story collection Flashes in Time. As it happens, the former imagines an AI Overlord scenario, and the latter, well, there’s a bit of that there too, but many of the stories also feature neurodiverse protagonists – both human and animal, biological and technological.
Cheers, and see you there!
